Interaction skills
Interaction takes place when there are two or more people present. A person always influences the other, whether they want it or not. The goal of interaction is to make the recipient understand the message through words and non-verbal messages. Facial expressions, gestures and attitude affect the delivery and understanding of the message.
In an interactive situation, the participants produce, share and interpret meanings together. It is a complex process with no clear beginning and end. What we say and how our message is interpreted depends on many factors. It is affected by, among other things, the context, the goals and interpretations of the parties involved, and the culture.
These promote interaction
- active listening
- being authentic
- ability and desire to put oneself in the other’s shoes
- ability and willingness to cooperate
- assertiveness
- giving support
- giving space.
These hinder interaction
- strong biases
- partiality
- generalization or blaming
- lack of interest
- hurry.
The Once Upon a Time in a Work Community video illustrates how difficult issues can be discussed constructively.
