Publication insight: A supervisor’s well-being cannot be taken for granted

The digital publication Supervisor’s Own Wellbeing, published by the Centre for Occupational Safety, provides practical support and information for those in managerial roles.
“This publication responds to the current needs of workplaces. Its content has been carefully compiled by the Institute’s sectoral group for municipalities and wellbeing services counties, but it is suitable for all sectors,” says , Senior Specialist Seija Moilanen at the Centre for Occupational Safety.
The role of a manager includes not only responsibilities but also rights, which are intended to support the execution of the role and help ensure that the manager does not become harmfully burdened. For a manager’s own wellbeing, it is essential to understand their responsibilities and know where to find help and support for their work and coping.
Wellbeing Is Built on Support, Competence, and Open Communication
Managing workload is supported by regular discussions with one’s own supervisor, shared practices, and clearly defined expectations for the managerial role.
The employer is responsible for onboarding the manager into their role, but the manager also has a duty to maintain their own competence and develop their leadership skills.
“A lack of skills and resources in relation to job demands can easily lead to harmful overload,” Moilanen reminds.
A psychologically safe work environment, open communication, and staff participation in joint development reduce the burden on managers.
“It is important that a manager recognizes their own stress levels and dares to speak up. Doing so is not a sign of weakness, but of courage,” Moilanen emphasizes.
